Listening

WE CAN HELP YOU WITH

Listening and Behavior

It is common for children to hear up to one to two commands from adults per minute; meaning they hear hundreds of commands in a day. No wonder they seem to tune most of it out, or only respond when you lose your cool. Whether your child struggles to move through routines, is resistant to redirection, or you long for a day with more listening and less yelling, Trustle is here to help.

FIRST OF ALL

Three Things Every Parent Should Know About Getting Your Child To Listen

1

Keep it simple

Less is more when it comes to fostering good listening skills. Telling your child “WHEN you have your shoes on, THEN we can leave for the playground” is far more likely to be effective then firing off a whole list of directions at once.
2

Don't ask a question if you are not prepared for the answer

If you want your child to put their shoes on, don’t ask them “Are you ready to put your shoes on?” if you aren’t prepared for the answer to be “No!”. Instead, tell them: “It's time to put your shoes on”.
3

Listen to your child, too

Take the time to listen to what your child has to say. A child who feels heard is more likely to be emotionally ready to follow your directions than one who is intent on telling you something of the utmost importance!
