We looked at your responses and have made the following analysis of dfg’s sleep.
1. Bedtime

First up, you told us putting dfg to sleep is not currently a big challenge. Yay! Glad to hear you’re doing great on this. 

Sleep Pressure

The technical term for how tired a baby is called, “sleep pressure.” The goal with sleep pressure is to have just the right amount. Think of it like a balloon. Too little air and the balloon won’t float, and too much air it will pop. At just the right amount, dfg will drift off to sleep without complaint. 

dfg could be struggling with bedtime because he either isn’t tired enough or is too tired. Because he doesn't have a consistent bedtime it's hard to tell, and indeed could change each day!

Here’s a chart for how much sleep you should be aiming for. Keep in mind, this is a general guide, and children vary significantly.

Bedtime Routine

A key part of a sucessfull bedtime is the routine. Going to sleep is a skill, and young children are still learning it, alongside everything else they’re learning.

It looks like your routine may be a little underdeveloped. By having a number of set activities like lullabies and books in a consistent order as part of a routine, you’re letting dfg know, consciously and subconsciously, that it’s time to get ready for bed. Children are not as good at transitions (moving between one activity to another) than adults. A routine helps them gradually switch to a calm state ready before bed.

Finally, the fact dfg goes to bed at a different time each night could cause issues (not just at bedtime, but overnight too.) Having a consistent bedtime and wake-up time helps dfg set his body clock. Just like adults, children have a circadian rhythm and having a consistent bedtime makes sure that you’re asking them to go to sleep at a time when their body is ready. An inconsistent bedtime means that you’re fighting against the circadian rhythm which makes any other challenge so much harder.

2. Overnight

This chart shows you how all babies and adults move between light to deep sleep all night.. Feel familiar??

The difference for adults (and for children who don’t wake up all night) is that they barely come out of light sleep and immediately fall back to sleep. Babies aren’t born knowing how to go back to sleep themselves. They need help. Cue the crying!

The fact dfg sleeps through the night means this isn't an issue for him right now which is great! It's worth knowing though in case of a sleep regression.

Sleep Independence

You said dfg doesn't fall asleep independently. Instead he needs help, for example, .

Even though that’s how dfg goes to sleep initially, it actually affects the entire overnight experience. If dfg goes to sleep that way, he will need that every time he wakes up in the night. Children sleep better and longer when they go to sleep without help.

Because you go in overnight, and because dfg doesn’t yet have the skills to go back to sleep, he continues to need you in the middle of the night. Picking up, rocking, feeding or soothing dfg back to sleep at all hours is exhausting and unsustainable. But with the right sleep training method, you can give him the skills to not need this intervention.

You mentioned a pretty low tolerance for crying, so this method is a good choice to avoid leaving dfg to cry alone. 
This method usually takes a long time and parents may not have the energy to stay consistent.
